In new 16,000-sf third floor consolidates six medical specialties at a single convenient location.

GOALS:

  • Consolidate six specialty clinics onto one floor of the ambulatory services building
  • Share support staff
  • Improve staff workflow and communication with effective adjacencies
  • Improve patient care experience
  • Improve wayfinding
  • Upgrade building infrastructure
  • Save energy


CHALLENGES:

  • Adding a third floor to an existing 1970s structure
  • Tying new construction into multiple adjacent structures
  • Upgrading the structural system to meet current seismic codes
  • Coordinating work to allow clinics to function during construction


SOLUTIONS:

  • Designed a high-performance building envelope for the addition
  • Added new shear walls on the lower levels for seismic compliance
  • Replaced and upgraded mechanical and electrical systems, including a new mechanical penthouse, to comply with current VA standards
  • Replaced elevators for access to third floor and penthouse
  • Specified sustainable finishes
  • Added skylights to bring in more natural light
  • Designed the plan layout with clear wayfinding
  • Decentralized waiting into three areas to serve particular clinics
